If you wear glasses, you know how expensive and inconvenient it can be to replace them. I’ve worn glasses for years and spent far too much time without replacing them in the past because I wanted to avoid the hassle.

In this article, I’m going to take a look at the Walmart Vision Center, a handy option for buying your glasses online or in stores.

5 things to know before visiting the Walmart Vision Center

Whether you need an eye exam, new glasses, or new lenses, Walmart Vision Center may be a retailer to consider. I found a huge selection of frame styles and colors on the website at competitive prices.

To see if there is a Walmart Vision Center near you, visit store locator page and enter your postal code. If there is no location nearby, you can still buy glasses and contacts online.

Before placing an order or booking an eye exam, take a look at these five things to know about Walmart Vision Center:

1. What is available at the Walmart Vision Center?

When I first visited the Walmart Vision Center website, I saw that it offered prescription glasses and sunglasses, reading glasses, computer glasses and contact lenses. If you don’t already have a prescription, you can also have eye exams and contact lens adjustments with independent optometrists whose offices are located next to some vision centers.

If you visit the website to shop online, you can click on prescription eyewear for women, men, girls and boys to find over 600 styles with prices starting at under $ 20.

On the website (screenshot below), I saw options on the side of the screen that allowed me to further filter my results. To find frames sold by Walmart and not by third party sellers, be sure of select “Walmart.com” under “Retailers”. Once you’ve done that, you’ll see this option under “Filters Applied” on the left side of the screen.

After looking at the available frames, I found that Walmart is not the place to shop if you are looking Mark executives. I clicked on a few premium brands (Vera Wang, Armani, and Michael Kors), but there were only one or two styles under each, and they were sold by third parties.

I have found a much larger (and more affordable) selection of generic frameworks sold directly from Walmart.com.

Depending on your prescription and preferences, you may need a specific type of lens. Single vision lenses and progressive lenses without a line are available at the Walmart Vision Center. Once you’ve selected your prescription type, you can choose from clear, base, polarized, and transition lenses.

All clear plastic lenses are included for free and come with an anti-scratch coating. You can also choose from additional features, including an anti-reflective coating and impact-resistant lenses, for an additional fee.

Walmart Vision Center also carries the most popular brands of Contacts including Acuvue, Air Optix and Biofinity.

2. How much does an eye exam cost at Walmart?

If you have a Walmart Vision Center nearby and need a new prescription or update, you may be able to schedule your eye exam the. Some vision centers have independent optometric doctors working in offices next to Walmart.

An eye exam at Walmart costs around $ 73 depending on where you live. I found the cost of an eye exam at Walmart to be quite average compared to other popular optical centers.

You should call the nearest Walmart Vision Center to get the exact eye exam price before you plan. If you are equipped for contacts or if you are renewing your contacts order, you can expect additional charges.

Note that although some optometrists are employed by Walmart, most eye exams are performed by independent doctors who rent space in stores near vision centers.

You can book an exam using the online store finder and calling the number of your nearest location. According to the website, an associate will help you make an appointment.

3. How much do glasses cost at Walmart?

The price of frames varies depending on the materials they are made from. Likewise, lens prices vary depending on the features required by your prescription.

Walmart Vision Center offers frames online starting at just under $ 20 and going up to $ 165. I used the inline filters to narrow the price range and found that more … than 180 corrective lenses are available for under $ 100 including styles for men, women and children.

Lens prices vary depending on the type of lenses you choose and the frames you choose. The base prices you’ll see for the frames include clear plastic single vision lenses with a scratch-resistant coating.

While single vision lenses are available free of charge, progressive lenses without a line cost $ 50. Once you have chosen your prescription type, you will be able to choose from the following options from these prices:

  • Clear glasses: free
  • Base shade: $ 41
  • Polarized tint: $ 65
  • Transition lenses: $ 65

Note that for prescription sunglasses, you will be able to choose only from the base or polarized tint options.

All lenses have an anti-scratch coating at no additional cost. Additional features include anti-reflective coating starting at $ 50 and impact resistant lenses starting at $ 31. Nikon Eyes Advanced and Customized lens options are also available for select frames starting at $ 121.

Contacts start from $ 20 per box at the Walmart Vision Center, but that price varies greatly depending on the brand you use. Be sure to check prices a few reliable online retailers to make sure you get the best deal on contacts.

4. What insurance does Walmart Vision Center take?

Walmart Vision Center accepts most major insurers, but only for eye exams and at the store purchases. To find out if your insurance is accepted, call your nearest location.

According to the website, Walmart is an off-grid provider for the following insurance companies:

  • Vision managed by Cole
  • Davis Vision
  • EyeMed
  • Specters
  • VSP

For more information on how to receive a refund from one of these providers, visit this page on Walmart.com.

5. How long does it take to get glasses from the Walmart Vision Center?

According to Walmart website, “98% of all orders in the United States arrive in the Delivery time of 7 to 10 days listed on our website. However, the vast majority of orders shipped from inventory will arrive much sooner. “

When I added a few pairs of prescription glasses to my online shopping cart, I was told they would arrive in three and a half weeks from the time of ordering. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic may have had an impact on the estimated delivery time when I was researching this story. In-store pickup was not available, but shipping was free for orders over $ 35.

Expedited shipping (3-4 business days) is available for contact lenses for $ 11.95. I couldn’t find an expedited option online for the glasses.

Final thoughts

Overall, I have found that Walmart Vision Center has a great selection of affordable frames and lenses when it comes to eyeglasses and sunglasses. Comprehensive eye exams are also available at an average price compared to competitors like Target Optical, Sam’s Club and Costco.

When I looked at the cost of prescription lenses and frames, I found that the prices are comparable to those of EyeBuyDirect and America’s best. If you take the time to compare, you will likely find lower prices from an online competitor like Zenni optical. Still, the prices at Walmart Vision Center are a bit more competitive than what you’ll see on average at Optical target or even Warby parker.

For single vision frames and lenses, I have found you can easily stay under $ 100 by ordering your glasses online. However, I recommend visiting the store to try on glasses and use whatever insurance benefits you have.
