The owners of the Family Vision Center say they remain committed to Bridgeport after nearly six decades.

“Many other optometrists have left the area, but we really wanted to stay true to our vision,” said co-owner Kristine Heslin who has run the family business with her sister, Kathy Raucci, for years.

The family practice of optometry nearly tripled its footprint in Park City with the opening of a new facility at 107 Boston Ave. Heslin said the move was aimed at expanding services to its multigenerational patient base.

The two-story building offers 4,500 square feet of space, which Heslin says has allowed the company to add two new examination rooms. Optical services are managed on the first floor and doctors’ offices on the upper level, she added.

The new medical center is next to where the original Family Vision Center building was located. According to Heslin, the first building, which once housed the Shamrock Diner, has since been demolished to make way for a parking lot to accommodate the new building.

“We’re coming back to providing great customer service… We’re kind of proud to be Connecticut’s premier eye care specialists for optometry,” Heslin said.

Construction of the new facility took approximately three years. The company officially celebrated the expansion of the family business recently, although Heflin said it has been operating without fanfare for months.

Family Vision Center has been in business since 1964, when Heslin and Raucci’s father, Dr. Michael Gorman, opened the first office on Boston Avenue. The practice also has an office in Stratford at 775 Main Street, which opened approximately 30 years ago.

The practice has six physicians and offers a variety of services, including a certified dry eye treatment center and a full-service on-site lab for quick glasses. Doctors at family vision centers specialize in a mix of services such as eye pathology and eye disease.

“It really is such a need and one of the reasons we have stayed at Bridgeport is to make sure that we are there to provide the latest and greatest technology to our patients,” Heslin said.
