The New Year is finally here, which means millions of us have already made resolutions and set goals, hoping to spark positive change in 2022.
With that in mind, the crafting experts at Hobbycraft are predicting a huge January vision board trend as Britons relax and consider their intentions for the year ahead.
In the first week of January last year, searches for “vision boards” on Google trends hit an all-time high, while searches on Hobbycraft.co.uk for the same period increased by 37% compared to the same period in 2020.
But what is a vision board? It is basically a visual representation of your goals and resolutions. So whether you’re planning to cook more or take up a new hobby in 2022, this can be a useful tool to help you along the way.
And visual onboarding has many benefits too: embracing your creativity, motivating you, improving your productivity, increasing your chances of success, and making you happier.
Aisha Green, Content and Creative Marketing Manager at Hobbycraft, shared her top tips on how to make the perfect vision board with some step-by-step instructions.
STEP 1: Set your goals for 2022
- Start by taking a few minutes to keep a journal and jot down some ideas.
- Make sure you are in a relaxing environment and spend five to 10 minutes writing down the things you would like to achieve in 2022.
- These can be fun, serious, or a mix of both – the point is to think about what you would like your life to look like a year from now.
- Write it all down!

STEP 2: Collect materials and inspiration that make you small
- Once you’ve decided on your goals, it’s time for the fun part: gathering all the materials and inspiration for your vision board!
- Make sure you have a mix of magazines and craft supplies on hand so you can find photos and words that stand out and match your goals.
- In addition to goals, cut out and collect photos that capture all areas of your life, such as your relationships, your family, your hobbies, your home, your dream vacation, and even your style.
STEP 3: Decide on your vision board layout
- Once you have the material, start putting it on your vision board.
- When it comes to planning your layout, you can set all your photos on the board before you put them up or attach photos as you go.
- Cork boards are great because you can easily change your display whenever you want.
- Another way to display your 2022 vision is to use a poster and fill in the details with washi tape or your own doodles.

STEP 4: Find the right place for your vision board
- Once you’re done putting everything on the board, place it in an iconic spot you’ll see every day!
- The more likely you are to see your vision board and all of your dreams, the more likely you are to remember them and work towards achieving them each day.
Some materials to help you along the way
As mentioned earlier, the more creative your board is, the better. As long as your goals stand out, everything should be included, from old family photos to glitter paper and ribbons.
We’ve rounded up the craft supplies below to inspire you.
Best tips:
- Ask yourself what do you want to achieve in 2022?
- Add quotes that inspire you and make one word or phrase stand out more than others
- Place the larger images first, then fill the open spaces with the smaller ones to create visual balance and design interest with your board
- Don’t be afraid to mix and match media types – glitter pens, gemstones, nibs and stickers are all welcome!
