The US government is taking another step forward in its efforts to defend itself against the ever-growing threat of cyberattacks.

Adm of the Navy. Michael Rogers, Commanding Officer American Cyber Command, released a new vision statement for the military command on Tuesday, September 8, while stressing the need for Cyber Command and its subordinate units to integrate its cyber defense operations into both national security and military efforts .

“Our challenge is to protect the things we value – freedom, prosperity, intellectual property and personal information – without impeding the free flow of information that promotes growth and intellectual dynamism,” Rogers writes in the paper titled “ Beyond the Build: Getting Results Through Cyberspace.

According to a press article from Department of Defense (DoD), the statement establishes Rogers’ intention for Cyber Command to use knowledge-sharing practices to educate the military, the intelligence community, and civilian agencies about cyber threats and how to deal with them.

The Cyber Command, who is in charge of the DoD’s cybersecurity defense, defends the department’s networks, systems and information, as well as military and emergency operations to protect the United States from cyber attacks.

The declaration identifies cyberspace as a new “battlefield”, just as land, air, sea and space are areas in which the country must have the necessary defenses. The vision statement calls for “new ways to defend, fight and team up against adversaries of learning in the contested cyber domain,” which will necessitate the need to operationalize cyberspace, the DoD reported.

“We [must] maintain an operational mindset, with our networks and cyber capabilities led by commanders who understand that they are always in real or imminent contact with adversaries, ”Rogers said in the vision statement.

The vision statement also identifies plans for Cyber Command to partner with both government and private sector agencies to better prevent and identify future cyber attacks.

“I intend to move forward quickly with our partners to strengthen our military capabilities,” added Rogers. “We will build our teams and capabilities to be agile, innovative and responsible in carrying out our missions on behalf of our nation.
